NVMe SSD health monitoring spotted in Windows 10 Insider build

The cacophony of a hard drive dying is something many PC users will have experienced, but knowing when an SSD is about to fail is not as easy as listening for the grind of a dying drive.

There are third-party software solutions that can help in this regard, but unless you obsess over your PC every moment you get, it’s not really common for the layperson to know about these.

Enter Microsoft, which has introduced storage health monitoring in the latest version of Windows 10 Insider Preview, Build 20226.

Before we go any further we should highlight that this feature is only available to Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel so you might not see this update. Even more important is that this feature might not make it to the final stable release.

Storage health monitoring in this regard is specifically for NVMe SSDs and is designed to detect anomalies and give users enough time to react.

And react they should as Microsoft notes, “It is strongly recommended that users immediately back up their data after receiving a notification”.

The warning above is a tad too plain if you ask us, but this is a preview build so hopefully Microsoft makes it look a bit more urgent such as when a security threat is detected.

We’re hopeful that this tool makes it to the final build of Windows 10 as there are many more folks using an NVMe SSD these days and a bit of warning before a failure would be great.
