htxt.africast – SA education in 2020 and the digital divide

As we touched on last week, the latest edition of the africast is a little different from the usual format, as brought in two local experts on the South African education sector.

Before we delve into some of the topics discussed in this bumper version of the africast, we highlighted one of this week’s features, which looked at a concerning development in the local QR payments space.

More specifically how platforms like Zapper are choosing to exit the Masterpass (a part of Mastercard) ecosystem for practices that have made it interoperability untenable. It’s also an issue that Masterpass seems unperturbed by, despite giving us comment on the matter.

As for the bulk of the africast, we spoke to Leo Stagg, IT director at St David’s Marist Inanda and Riaan Vlok, group head of IT at Curro Holdings.

Both were able to provide their insight into what has transpired at their respective institutions throughout 2020 to date, as well as some of the challenges they’ve been able to overcome through digital solutions. The topic of the digital divide also came up, and how more needs to be done for schools and learners lacking access to solid connectivity.

This is one of many expert-led podcasts we hope to do in future, so please do share your thoughts on whether you’d like to see more of this type of content from Hypertext on Facebook and Twitter.
