Microsoft Edge getting new features like private search & instant video calls

In the world of web browsers, Microsoft Edge has yielded mixed responses from users, especially given its heavy reliance on Bing as its native search engine. While that is still the case, Microsoft recently detailed some new features for Edge, that may give it an edge (sorry, it’s been a long week) over an offering like Chrome.

Oddly, Microsoft has framed many of these new features with the holiday season coming up and the increasing amount of online shopping that will be happening. The features on this front include the ability to do live price comparisons within Edge for different products, as well as a cash back system called Bing Rebates (US only).

While those may interest some festive shoppers, our immediate interest is in some of the other features that Microsoft Edge will be getting soon. One rather intriguing one is InPrivate Browsing, which takes the idea of an incognito tab a step further by removing any search history elements in this mode.

There’s also a new video chat function that will allow users to quickly launch a session from within a newly opened tab. The Meet Now function will allow users to create said video chat, as well as generate a link to share with up to 50 members for a larger session if needed. Given how many meetings and briefings are happening virtually at the moment, this is a nice feature to have readily on-hand sans an extension.

Looking at some of the customisation elements, users will be able to set their theme background from within the Microsoft Edge browser, selecting an image from one of their favourites to do so. Added to this, Microsoft Edge is getting a custom theme for Wonder Woman 1984 (seen in the header above), which you can download too, if you have any interest.

Microsoft Edge is also getting its own screenshot tool, which means you won’t have to load the one in Windows 10 in order to capture something on your browser. This tool will allow users to take their cursor, and click and drag the area they want a screenshot of. A nice addition to this tool, is that it can drag further down the browser window, which means you’re not limited to what is in the immediate view.

All these new features should be rolling out, or be available for download to Windows 10 users running Microsoft Edge right now. Whether they will get some to ditch Chrome or another browser, remains to be seen.
