The country is heading for a rather significant number when it comes to COVID-19 in South Africa, with the 700 000 total infections figure fast approaching. Going on past daily numbers, we’d likely surpass that mark by this time next week, which means there is still much to be done in terms of stopping the spread of the virus locally.
As for the total number of infections at the time of writing, according to the National Department of Health (NDoH), that figure now sits at 692 471, with 1 575 new cases being reported over the past 24 hours.
Continuing to look at the latest figures, the total number of recoveries is now at 623 765, which translates to a recovery rate of 90.07 percent, which is a percentage it has hovered in and around for a couple of weeks now. Whether the push past 90 percent happens any time soon, remains to be seen.
Looking at the total number of tests conducted to date, over 4.4 million is being reported by the NDoH.
Another statistic we need to actively monitor is that of fatalities, with 107 additional deaths being recorded over the past 24 hours. This has resulted in the total number of fatalities related to the pandemic now being 17 780.
Of the 107 new fatalities, the NDOh confirms that 58 are from the Eastern Cape, 38 from the Free State, four from KwaZulu Natal, six from Gauteng and one from the Western Cape.
