The National Department of Health (NDoH) has released its latest daily report regarding COVID-19 in South Africa, and the same trend as far as the number of cases over the past few weeks can be seen.
To that 1 877 new cases have been been recorded over the past 24 hours, with the total number of cases to date now rising to 696 414.
If the daly infection rate continues at this level, we will likely surpass the 700k infection mark by the end of the coming weekend. As such, it remains to be seen whether the country can drop the daily infection rate further, as this would be the only way that government decides to move out of lockdown.
For now, the recovery rate is still sitting steady at 90 percent, with 626 898 recoveries reported to date. As for testing, the NDoH says 4.45 million tests have been conducted as of the time of writing.
Unfortunately, there appears to be an increase in the number of new daily fatalities being reported, with 123 occurring over the past 24 hours. Consequently, the country’s death toll related to COVID-9 is now 18 151.
Of the new 123 fatalities, the NDoH confirms that 44 are from the Eastern Cape, 14 from the Free State, 17 from KwaZulu-Natal, 35 from Gauteng, eight from the North West and five from the Western Cape.
