As we get ready to enter another week under alert level 1 lockdown, the number of new daily infections for COVID-19 in South Africa appear to be holding steady, with it failing to surpass the 2k mark so far this week.
Whether that changes over the weekend, especially as more people will be interacting due to lessened restrictions, remains to be seen, but as always the National Department of Health (NDoH) has weighed in with its latest figures on the spread of the virus.
To that end the past 24 hours has seen 1 736 new cases being recorded over the past 24 hours. This has resulted in the total number of infections to date for SA being 686 891, with 618 771 recoveries also being reported.
The latter translates to a recovery rate of 90 percent, according to the NDoH, which is a figure it has sat on for some time.
While the number of new daily cases has not peaked significantly of late, the number of fatalities is unfortunately growing. Here, 160 new deaths have been recorded, resulting in the current number of fatalities related to COVID-19 in South Africa being 17 408.
Of the new 160, the NDoH says that 18 are from the Eastern Cape, six from the Free State, 105 from KwaZulu Natal, 13 from Gauteng, six from Limpopo, four from Mpumalanga, and eight from the Western Cape.
