PlayStation Trophy level bumped to 999

Sony has announced changes to its trophy level system which have been a part of its console ecosystem since the PlayStation 3.

Trophy levels, which used to range from one to 100, will now be one to 999. This doesn’t mean that the ceiling has been raised, but that the entire system has altered to take into account these higher numbers.

Players who covet their trophies and trophy level have nothing to worry about, however, as this will be changed automatically without them missing out or having to do much of anything.

“…following this update, your Trophy level will automatically be remapped to a new level within this new range based on the Trophies you’ve earned to date. For example, if your current Trophy level is 12, your new level will jump to somewhere in the low 200’s. The exact level will depend on the number and grades of trophies you’ve acquired. There will be no changes to the Trophies already earned or Trophy information, such as unlock requirements,” says Toshimasa Aoki, Director, Product Management at Sony Interactive Entertainment.

This change also comes with new icons for the trophy levels, which you can see in the header image above. This replaces a simple gold star system in place now.

The reason given for this change is to keep players encouraged and see the numbers go up faster. More levels means that each individual level is easier to obtain.

“We’ve implemented a new Trophies level calculation system that is more optimized and rewarding. Players will progress quicker through the early levels, and levels will increase more consistently. Platinum trophies will count more toward your level progression, making them even more valuable,” Aoki adds.

On top of this we have to imagine that the change is in preparation for the launch of the PlayStation 5 in November.

This update to the trophy system was made live in North America a few hours ago. Europe should see the change today, but the PlayStation Blog announcement makes no mention of the rest of the world.
