Samsung back as top smartphone vendor, with Xiaomi overtaking Apple

It looks like Huawei’s reign as the top vendor when it comes to smartphone shipments was short lived, as the latest report from research firm IDC sees Samsung regain its number one position.

There is also some rather interesting changes of position, with Apple slipping down one place to fourth on the list as Chinese firm Xiaomi has come in at third. Huawei of course, finds itself in the middle of the top three, with many of the recent quarterly reports adding credence to the current positions.

IDC also notes that while smartphone shipments on the whole declined during Q3 of 2020, it did not decline by as much as the research firm had originally predicted.

“In total, 353.6 million smartphones were shipped during 3Q20 and while the market declined, the results were stronger than IDC’s previous forecast of a 9% year-over-year decline,” it explained in a press release.

“This is largely attributed to the re-opening of economies around the globe as COVID-19 restrictions were gradually relaxed,” the firm added.

The latter contributing factor noted here, is also part of the reason for Samsung’s success in Q3, the South Korean smartphone maker highlighted in its own Q3 report. Said report also noted that the forecast for Q4 is predicted to be lower, particularly as competition in the market will play a factor.

As such, it should be interesting to see what kind of changes that has on the order of the top vendors. Apple for example, may be able to bolster its position if sales of the iPhone 12 series is good.

There are also factors like the Huawei’s continued troubles with the US, which could see it fall in the rankings too.

With COVID-19 still having a significant impact on manufacturing and supply chains, it will prove interesting to see which vendors can hold firm, or improve their positions.
