Earlier this year, in what have been some good fortune, Samsung chose to host its global launch event for the Galaxy S20 series before the chaos of COVID-19 enveloped the world. Now the South Korean firm is reportedly planning to unveil its next Galaxy S flagship even earlier, with leaked information noting that we could see the new lineup in January 2021.

This according to Steve Hemmerstoffer, aka @onleaks, who shared his insider knowledge on Voice, which seems to be the new go-to destination for consumer tech tipsters.

There he shares rendered images of what is being called the Galaxy S21, with the pictures in question showcasing a far larger rear camera housing, as well as slightly curved edges and an even thinner bezel for the device.

With Samsung naturally withholding comment on the leaked images, it remains to be seen if this will indeed be the new flagship, but looking at the aesthetic, it will likely be quite similar, unless the South Korean firm is planning something totally different for the next Galaxy S device.

As for the aforementioned launch, it is believed that Samsung will be revealing the device in January. With the company usually doing so in late February or early March, in and around MWC, this move to January is said to be prompted by the new 5G-supporting iPhone 12 lineup from Apple.

It therefore looks like Samsung wants to ensure that its latest hardware is in the market shortly after Apple launches its devices, with Android Central adding credence to the @onleaks information.

Whether other companies like Huawei, Sony and LG will do the same, remains to be seen, especially as the in-person fate of MWC next year is still up in the air.

Either way, the metronomic format we once had with smartphone launches each year has been altered by COVID-19, and will likely remain in flux throughout 2021 as the world tries to bring the pandemic under control.
