WhatsApp adds new Storage Tool to help clean up your data

WhatsApp can prove a memory intensive application, especially if you’re a heavy user who is doing more than sending messages.

It’s why you may be pleased to hear that WhatsApp has launched a Storage Management Tool to help clean up all the data stored on the application and free up some of that much needed space.

The Tool allows users to have a wider view of the content that has been saved from or shared via WhatsApp, with media like GIFs, videos and voice notes getting particular attention.

As such, it will allow you to select bulk items and delete them when needed. Added to this is the ability to order and categorise content in terms of how often is has been shared/forwarded. This may prove useful for content that have become memes or viral in any way, as they are relatively easy to find online.

While WhatsApp did not provide further explanation, another potential reason for ordering content in terms of much it has been forwarded, could be down to the fact that WhatsApp has been actively monitoring how viral content is shared on its platform, with a specific focus on misinformation, which has a higher tendency to go viral.

As Engadget notes, there is always the option to unselect the default autosave function within WhatsApp for media, but this new Tool could serve as a nice feature for those who cannot choose between one or the other setting.

The feature is rolling out on WhatsApp across the globe from today onwards, so be on the lookout for it. Once updated, you can access it by heading to to Settings, selecting Storage and data, and lastly Manage storage.
