The FireCuda Gaming Dock is a new breed of expandable storage

Storage, even in the fast changing world of gaming, is a rather stagnant industry on the surface. You’ve got internal storage, external storage, and then either spinning or solid drives in either. That’s it right? Been that way for years?

Well Seagate certainly thought so, which is why they sought to reinvent external storage with the new FireCuda Gaming Dock.

Let’s, as always, start with the hardware. The FireCuda Gaming Dock is a sleek external enclosure which won’t take up much space on your desk or in your bag: the 51 X 270 X 135 millimetre device comes in an attractive black colour which can be lit up with your choice of lighting, but more on that later.

Packed into that enclosure, as standard, is a huge 4 terabyte hard drive. Even for those games which are slowly encroaching on 100 gigabytes a pop, 4 terabytes can fit dozens of them with ease.

That means never needing to uninstall anything only to waste your time re-downloading in the future. For those who want productivity it also means keeping every single historical version of your important work, even when each takes up so much space.

But large external drives have been around for the longest time, so the FireCuda Gaming Dock offers more. You may have noticed that the design of the dock is broken into two segments. What’s hiding in the smaller segment on the right? Well it’s a dock for an M.2 NVMe SSD. That’s right you can open this device up and add your own faster storage as you please.

Seagate’s fantastic FireCuda 510 NVMe SSD is perfect for this and made to fit right in without any issues. This means you can have the 4 terabyte hard drive for games you play less frequently and files you want archived, as well as a much faster NVMe SSD drive for games you frequent and files you use daily. The best of both worlds in one device.

While it has “dock” right there in the name there’s even more to find as you look closer, because the FireCuda Gaming Dock is also a USB hub. Connecting to your desktop or notebook with a single Thunderbolt 3 cable (which is included in the box), you can then connect a variety of other devices and peripherals as you see fit.

This single cable gives you access to this bevy of ports:

  • 1 – Thunderbolt 3
  • 1 – DisplayPort 1
  • 4 – USB 3.1 Gen2 ports
  • 1 – USB 3.1 Gen2 battery-charge port
  • 1 – RJ45 Ethernet network port
  • 1 – 3.5 mm audio-in/mic port
  • 1 – 3.5 mm audio-out port

Your mouse and keyboard, headset, microphone and even a second screen can all work through through this one hub, on top of the extra storage which we started with. If you love a clean setup on your desk this is a perfect solution to combine many devices into one. It’s also a must have for the minimalists out there who like to condense their work space into the smallest possible footprint.

And now, maybe the most important feature… the RGB lighting. We kid but this functionality is to be expect nowadays and you’re catered for here if you like your setup to strobe. There’s custom software available for you to set the colour and effects as you like, and it supports the Razor Chroma RGB ecosystem. if you already own other Razer accessories or tech that is Chroma-compatible, you can combine your RGB lighting under one umbrella.
