Donald Trump’s Twitter account is a sea of warnings about disputed and misinformation

After a week that felt longer than March 2020, the result of the US elections was projected at the weekend with Joe Biden and Kamala Harris set to take over the reigns of the US government.

But rather than concede the loss with grace, President Donald Trump has spent a large portion of the weekend tweeting about election fraud, retweeting news articles from the likes of Breitbart and video clips from Fox News. All while reportedly playing some golf, which is fine we suppose.

Unfortunately for Trump, Twitter has taken a red marker and added warnings to most of the tweets on his timeline.

The warning in the tweet above directs users to a Twitter events page which states:

“With ballot counting continuing and the presidential race being called for Joe Biden, experts and officials say there has been no evidence of widespread voter fraud in the 2020 US election. The election process is secure and voter fraud of any type is incredibly rare according to The Associated Press and Reuters. Officials and experts warn that the most interference in US elections, whether from foreign or domestic players, comes in the form of misinformation campaigns, many of which are intended to create distrust in the US’s electoral process.”

It is more important to note that many of the challenges being made about the elections are baseless and have little to no evidence to back them up.

In addition, the page details how rare election fraud is in the US and how resilient the elections were to outside influence.

For those who are curious about the legal challenges launched by the Trump campaign and how they have fared we highly recommend this overview done by Times.

While some tweets were simply slapped with a warning, others have been limited.

For example, on the day the election results were projected, Trump took to Twitter to claim that “Tens of thousands of votes were illegally received after 8 P.M. on Tuesday, Election Day, totally and easily changing the results in Pennsylvania and certain other razor thin states. As a separate matter, hundreds of thousands of Votes were illegally not allowed to be OBSERVED.”

This tweet is hidden from Trump’s timeline requiring viewers to seek out the tweet to view it. Should you try to retweet the tweet, you are forced to Quote Tweet it.

Twitter famously took a stand against Donald Trump’s habit of spreading misinformation via Twitter earlier this year.

“Our intention is to connect the dots of conflicting statements and show the information in dispute so people can judge for themselves. More transparency from us is critical so folks can clearly see the why behind our actions,” Twitter’s chief executive officer, Jack Dorsey, said at the time.

We have to commend Twitter for doing what is right despite Trump angrily threatening the social network at every turn.

On that note, Trump will not be able to tweet what he likes for much longer.

Twitter has confirmed that come 20th January, when Joe Biden is inaugurated, the @realDonaldTrump account will be subject to the same rules every other user must adhere to.

That means that tweets like “When the looting starts, the shooting starts” -if tweeted out in future – could find Trump on the wrong side of a ban hammer.

On a somewhat lighter note, we don’t think anything sums up Trump’s single term in office, quite like the tweet below. A wild claim that is accompanied with a fact check? Sounds about right.
