Netflix is testing scheduled programming in France

Netflix often runs a number of experiments with a view to improving its service for users and the latest experiment is an interesting one.

Netflix is calling its latest test feature Direct and it’s quite simply linear programming as you might expect from a regular TV channel.

The experiment is only live in France for now and it’s limited to some regions within the country, but all members in France should have Netflix Direct by December.

“In France, watching traditional TV remains hugely popular with people who just want a ‘lean back’ experience where they don’t have to choose shows,” Netflix wrote in a press release.

“‘Direct’ is a web-based experience that’s the same for everyone who watches it: a real-time service that gives our members in France some of the best French and European content on the service – from Family Business to La Casa de Papel, The Crown to Unorthodox. Instead of choosing what to watch, you just want to start watching,” the firm added.

The fact that Direct is limited to the web version of Netflix makes sense from a technical standpoint, but we have to wonder whether a feature such as Direct isn’t better suited for a smart TV or set-top-box.

As mentioned, however, Direct is little more than an experiment right now so we’ll have to see whether it does arrive on other platforms or indeed other countries.
