TelkomONE lets you stream some SABC channels for free

Back in October we learned of a new streaming service from Telkom that it was calling TelkomONE.

At the time the only information available about TelkomONE was the competition to get folks to make content for the service but today we have a lot more details.

Let’s start with the streaming options. There are two here, a free option and a paid option Telkom is calling AMP.

The AMP package starts at R7 per day though you can pay R49 up front for an entire month.

You do not need to be an existing Telkom customer to make use of TelkomONE. That having been said, an AMP subscription will give you free data to be used especially for streaming through Telkom One. The amount of data depends on the AMP package selected and Telkom customers can purchase bundles which can be used for streaming from the platform.

How to sign up

To sign up for a free TelkomONE account head to telkomone.tv on any browser on any device.

Click or tap Sign up and you will be prompted to enter your contact number (no email option is present as of time of writing) and a password to register.

An activation code will then be sent to the number you keyed into the sign up page, put that key into the text box when prompted and you will then be logged into TelkomONE.

Should you wish to subscribe to AMP, you can subscribe by heading to the Subscribe sub-menu and select the package you want.

Pricing is as follows:

  • AMP Daily – R7
  • AMP Weekend – R17
  • AMP Weekly – R19
  • AMP Monthly – R49

Content spread

A cursory look at TelkomONE reveals, well, not much to be frank.

The only SABC TV channels available to stream are SABC 1 and SABC 2. SABC Sport is available as is SABC Education and Mindset but pickings are slim as regards content but it is free.

You can also stream 19 SABC radio stations.

As for AMP, well we aren’t seeing anything especially noteworthy here.

There is a wide spread of local content thanks to the SABC’s archives but as of time of writing we’re reminded of Cell C’s now defunct streaming service black. That is to say, there is lots of content but not much that you’d actually watch.

We are hopeful that this changes in future. If it doesn’t then we aren’t sure how long TelkomONE will remain viable.

Yes, it has the SABC in its corner but if nobody is watching or using a service, then it makes no sense to keep it running.

Something important to note here is that the SABC will be receiving a carriage license fee and a share of the advertising revenue generated through TelkomONE.

We’re going to keep an eye on TelkomONE over the next few months to see how the service grows.

That having been said, with the SABC trying to pry TV licenses from streaming services, we’re not sure we’ll be using this service for all that long.
