GPD reveals its latest – and weirdest – Windows gaming handheld

Chinese company GPD has made a name for itself producing Windows handhelds that are portable but still able to play games, and it has finally revealed the next device in its line up.

For those who have been following the company – or were interested in the form factor from years prior – GPD’s past products resembled netbooks. Remember that odd time in tech history where notebooks were shrunk down and barely usable? GPD took that form factor and made a line of competent gaming devices that integrated standard controller elements into the keyboard area.

You can see this in past products such as the Win Max and Win 2, but for the new Win 3 things have gone in a completely different direction.

Yes GPD has once again repurposed the layout of older tech, this time around the Win 3 looks a lot like the Sony Vaio UX.

This would be where the story ends as those two pictures are all that GPD has revealed, but thanks to a copious amount of leaks we also know what hardware is inside this unique computer.

According to sources such as Liliputing and The Phawx the GPD Win 3 is powered by an Intel Tiger Lake CPU (Core i7-1165G7), Intel Iris Xe (96 eu) GPU and 16GB of RAM. The screen here is a 5.5 inch 720p offering that also features touch. This hardware, however, may change in the future.

As you can see from those specs this isn’t a beefy gaming machine, much like other GPD handhelds. This line of devices is designed for lighter experiences or cranking settings down extremely low while still accessing PC gaming on the go.

What makes the Win 3 different yet again is the dock you can see in the officially released pictures. This allows for connection to all manner of accessories such as a secondary display and even an external graphics card. We’re not sure why someone would want to use the GPD Win 3 like this when there’s such a focus on portability, but it’s always nice to have options.

Like other devices from this company the Win 3 will be crowdfunded with rumours stating that an Indiegogo campaign will launch in January 2021 with backers receiving devices in April – May of the same year. Like the hardware this is subject to change so look out for more solid information in the future.
