Plague Inc., the famous series of strategy games about fostering a pandemic to end life on Earth, has taken an abrupt turn in a free update called The Cure.
As you may have guessed this expansion of the game has players fighting against a fictional pandemic instead of creating and helping it.
The main gameplay aspects of this expansion have been laid out below:
- “Hunt the Disease: Dispatch research teams around the world to find patient zero, track the spread of the outbreak, boost testing capacity and support local responses.
- Control the Outbreak: Implement measures such as contact tracing, lockdowns and border closures to limit the spread of the outbreak, whilst getting people to wash their hands and preparing hospitals to prevent them getting overwhelmed.
- Support the Economy: People won’t comply with poorly designed quarantine/lock down measures; use furlough schemes and other policies to drive community support and consensus.
- Develop a Vaccine: Research, manufacture and distribute a vaccine to stop the disease. Work carefully and promote global cooperation to accelerate development.”
Developer Ndemic Creations has announced that this expansion has been created with the help of several global health experts including World Health Organisation (WHO), the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness (CEPI) and Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network (GOARN).
Ndemic Creations has worked with these agencies before. Back in March of this year the developer donated $250 000 (then around R4 million) to the WHO and CEPI to help fight COVID-19 when much less was known about the disease.
Plague Inc. – due its subject matter – has been inexplicably tied to the COVID-19 pandemic. Plague Inc: Evolved (the Steam version of the game) has been reporting record high player counts earlier this year as people flocked to the game to try and understand more about the spread of disease, even though it’s mainly a game made for entertainment purposes.
“It will be available on PC and consoles soon. Plague Inc: The Cure will be free for all Plague Inc. players until COVID-19 is under control,” Ndemic Creations adds.
