If you check out South African social media today, you’ll likely have spotted a few posts regarding the PlayStation. That’s because the local release of the next-gen console is due next week, and a selected number of South Africa media have been sent review units.
Hypertext happens to be just such a media outlet, with local PlayStation distributor Gamefinity graciously sending us one to review (thanks again).
Before we publish our fully fledged review of the PS5, we thought we’d do a video unboxing (embedded below), so local players can have an idea of what to expect when their pre-ordered consoles get delivered next week.
The review unit featured below is the 825GB model with Ultra HD Blu-ray optical drive. It currently retails on pre-order for R11 999, depending on the retailer, and interesting, the white box you see here, is exclusive to this model. If you opt for the cheaper Digital Edition of the PlayStation 5, the packaging is black.
As for the actual unboxing, we must admit that there is far less pomp and circumstance compared to some of the videos and images we’ve seen for the Xbox Series X. It therefore seems like PlayStation has not concerned itself with that element of the unboxing process.
What is evident is how large and heavy the PS5 is, especially compared to the previous generation of console. It therefore means you’ll have to think very carefully about where to set it up.
What also struck us as interesting is the colour, with it looking more like a pale dove grey than surgical white.
Either way, we’ll be spending the next few weeks with the PlayStation 5, exploring its UI, testing its performance, as well as playing some of its marquee launch titles. With that in mind, be sure to check out our site in the coming days and weeks, as we share more PlayStation 5-related content.
