Steam continues to add support for the PlayStation 5 controller

Today South Africans can finally get their hands on the PlayStation 5 and the redesigned DualSense controller. Thankfully the swish new white controller can also be used on Steam, thanks to several new updates to the client.

Through various client betas Steam has been adding in more and more functionality for PC players to make use of the DualSense’s unique features.

The latest client beta update, which went live a few hours ago, contains the following:

  • “Added additional support for the PS5 DualSense controller including LED, trackpad, rumble, and gyro functionality.
  • Added a directional swipe mode for use with trackpads and gyro.”

The above builds off of previous support for the controller added to Steam on 12th November:

  • “Added initial input support for the PS5 DualSense controller. Advanced features such as rumble, trackpad, and gyro are not yet supported.”

That 12th November update – which you can read in full here – also fixed a problem with the Xbox Series X|S controller showing up as two separate controllers. Right now it looks like no matter which next-gen console you picked up you will be able to use it to some degree in your Steam games.

As mentioned on the top these are changes only to the beta fork of the Steam client. You can opt into experimental beta updates using these instructions:

  1. “With Steam running, click on ‘Steam’ in the upper left, then choose the ‘Settings’ menu. (Preferences on Mac)
  2. On the “Account” tab under ‘Beta Participation’ click the ‘Change…’ button.
  3. Select the “Steam Beta Update” from the drop down list and click ‘OK’.
  4. You will be prompted to restart Steam, please select the ‘Restart Steam’ button.”

The dedicated Steam client beta page also has a handy quick gif showing the above off, together with instructions for Big Picture mode.
