SA students have one week left to apply to NSFAS

Today, 23rd November, represents the seven-day countdown until applications close for the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS).

On 30th November those looking for funding will lose their chance to apply and will need to seek alternate ways to fund their education, such as personal loans.

For those who would like to apply in this last week the official NSFAS website is the best place to go as it has everything you need. The organisation also routinely carries out in-person application drives, though these shouldn’t be relied upon in these last seven days, especially with the COVID-19 pandemic still in full swing.

For those who would still like to go through the process in person regardless, NSFAS recommends visiting one of the many National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) centres across the country.

When applying make sure you have the right supporting documents, as well as an email address. A video tutorial of the process can be found here.

Back in early November NSFAS announced that almost half a million students had applied for funding. While it has not provided an update on those numbers we have to imagine that they’ve grown since then, especially as applications this year have dwarfed 2019.

This, combined with the fact that more than a million students are writing the 2020 Matric exams right now, seem to indicate that 2021 will be a very important year in higher education.

In other NSFAS news it has recently completed its tender process to secure notebooks for students. Five successfully applicants will supply NSFAS with notebooks costing between R3 863 and R6 200 each.

Our requests to ascertain the specifications of these notebooks have been denied so far, but we’ll keep digging to find out what hardware 2021’s students will be getting.
