Twitter will show disputed notification when you like misleading tweet

This year Twitter, along with a few other social media platforms, have been developing tools to fight the spread of misinformation. That fight is still ongoing and this week Twitter debuted a new feature aimed at those users who like a misleading tweet.

This feature will bring up a notification stating the misleading tweet in question is under dispute, should you wish to like it.

If that sounds familiar, it is because the development of this feature was spotted a few weeks ago while it is in the experimentation phase. Now it looks like it is ready for rollout.

It is measures like this that are hopefully going to help Twitter tackle misinformation, and while there is still work to be done on that front, the early signs show that the platform’s new tools are having an impact.

The new rules had a direct impact on quote tweets in particular, the official Twitter Support account explained. Especially those that centred around COVID-19 misinformation the US Presidential elections, as well as media that had been doctored in some way.

“These prompts helped decrease Quote Tweets of misleading information by 29% so we’re expanding them to show when you tap to like a labeled Tweet,” the account tweeted out.

Moving forward this new feature for disputing a misleading tweet will go live for iOS and Web-based Twitter users this week. As for Android, it is expected in the coming weeks.

With misinformation, and the spread thereof, still remaining big issues that need to be tackled, it will prove interesting to see if this new feature will do the trick.
