This we continue to monitor the number of new daily infections for COVID-19 in South Africa with particular interest, as there remain concerns regarding a rise in infections ahead of the festive season.
To that end the latest report from the National Department of Health (NDoH) confirms 2 493 new infections, which is indeed up from the daily numbers we were seeing a couple of weeks ago.
This has pushed the total number of COVID-19 cases in the country to date to 772 252, with more than 5.32 million tests having been conducted to date. The number of recoveries have also picked up to 716 444, but the recovery rate remains the same at 92 percent.
Unfortunately, however, 115 new fatalities have also been recorded. The total number of deaths related to COVID-19 in South Africa now sits at 21 083 as a result.
As for the new 115, the Eastern Cape accounts for the most at 45, which again adds credence to concerns being raised about how effectively the province can cope with the pandemic should another wave of infections hit.
The rest of the newly recorded fatalities sees the Free State with 20, Gauteng with 19, KwaZulu-Natal featuring 10, the Northern Cape with five and the Western Cape contributing 16.
