Switch Lite Animal Crossing bundles arrive in South Africa this week

While Black Friday is usually seen as a way to move old stock at discounted rates, that won’t be true for Nintendo in South Africa as the company will be releasing a new product in the form of a new Nintendo Switch Lite bundle.

The bundle, which was just revealed internationally, contains a Nintendo Switch Lite console in either Turquoise or Coral, a download code for Animal Crossing: New Horizons and three months of Nintendo Switch Online.

According to the announcement from Nintendo South Africa (which takes the form of a newsletter), this bundle costs R5 999.

How does this price stack up to buying these three items individually? The below costs are from Nintendo’s own stores locally. Since none of the three items are unique in any way, this is an apples to apples comparison.

  • Nintendo Switch Lite in either Coral or Turquoise: R4 999
  • Animal Crossing: New Horizons code: R1 129
  • Three months of Nintendo Switch Online: R105

The total for those three items is R6 233, which means you “save” just R234 by buying the bundle. That’s not exactly a massive discount we’ve come to expect from Black Friday, but again this isn’t a usual release for the occasion.

While the bundle doesn’t offer great value to consumers in a vacuum, on a global stage it’s even worse. The UK and EU have prices which closely mirror what South Africans pay for products and, as such, it’s worth looking there to see how much we’re overpaying for products locally.

In the UK this new bundle sells for £239.99. At the time of writing that converts to around R4 879.70. Again the price of this bundle in South Africa is R5 999. When we spoke to Nintendo South Africa about Switch prices increases it explained that the poor exchange rate was to blame for these hiked prices.
