Unless you’ve been actively avoiding the internet for sometime, you’re probably aware that today is Black Friday. The day brings with it much online fervour and many a sale that consumers in the country can frantically take advantage of.
While we always like to err on the side of caution for any big ticket items purchased during a sale, some other South Africans are a bit more cavalier with their spending.
The ticker looks at the hundreds of thousands of transactions that PayFast will facilitate today, with all other data besides the basket amount and city where it took place featuring.
There is no grand total that has been shared at the time of writing, but the figures do make for interesting reading. Most notable is the fact that one basket purchase totaled R299 950.
Precisely what costs that much is unclear, but our editorial team has ventured several guesses, from a car or rare bottle of whisky, to a massive smart TV or overseas trip.
Interestingly, the PayFast tracker is also following the biggest basket sale made every hour, and we have seen the aforementioned R229 950 figure appear there before, so it looks like more than one person has purchased the same product, deal or offer this Black Friday.
Some of the other statistics that PayFast has shared is what device people are using to make purchases.
On that front mobile accounts for 53 percent and desktop has 47 percent. Drilling down into operating systems, Windows leads the way with 39 percent, followed closely behind by Android with 35 percent.
In a year when we thought consumers would be more austere with their spending on Black Friday, this tracker tells a different story, with retail therapy being the order of the day.
Either way, we’ll have to see how much was spend during Black Friday and Cyber Monday once the dust settles next week.
