6 features that set the LaCie 6big apart

While we’re all looking forward to 2021 for a fresh start something will remain the same in the new year. The need for reliable, fast Direct Attached Storage (DAS) is going to be even more important in the coming months as resolutions and content demands only scale up with time.

To meet these needs LaCie is here with its 6big Thunderbolt 3 DAS, a true enterprise-level machine. But why should you consider this enterprise-level machine for your editing pipeline?

Raw capacity

The meat and potatoes of any storage solution is just how much you can fit inside of it, and in that department the LaCie 6big Thunderbolt 3 has you covered.

Available in multiple configurations in South Africa from Orms Direct, You can pick up a DAS with 24, 48, 60, 84 or 96 terabytes of storage – that’s right, almost a hundred terabytes of storage. If you’ve been dreading those 4K or 8K file sizes this is the way to go.

Regardless of which capacity you choose the drives inside of these machines come from LaCie parent Seagate, one of the most trusted names in the storage business. The Seagate IronWolf Pro have proven themselves in just about every field of storage out there and you can depend on that proven track record in your editing DAS .

RAID ready

When you start talking about storage in such high numbers – and with all your valuable footage on them – RAID support is an absolute must.

In that regard the 6big supports 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, and 60 so you can choose your desired mix of speed and redundancy when it comes to the drives you own.

For newcomers to the world of RAID and experts alike there’s the LaCie RAID Manager software. This makes the process of managing your storage simple with an easy to user interface and complete control over your hardware.

If you’ve ever wanted to setup and use your own RAID DAS in your home or office, but were turned off by the complicity of it, the RAID Manager is here to help.

Thunderbolt

As you may have guessed by the name, the 6big has full support for Thunderbolt 3 and all the benefits this I/O provides.

Want to daisy chain a couple of 4K monitors together with your DAS? Need backwards compatibility with Thunderbolt 1 and 2? Want to experience the high speed interface of this latest connection at up to 1400MB/s? You can do that all here.

What’s better is the fact that you won’t need to buy anything extra as, right in the box with your 6big and its included drives, there’s a Thunderbolt 3 Cable (Thunderbolt 40 Gb/s USB-C) and a USB-C to USB-A cable.

Small on the outside

We’ve already touched on the massive internal storage of the 6big, so you may be forgiven for thinking that this DAS is a giant destined for a separate room. That’s just not the case as the 6big is made to fit on your desk.

The 6big is 23.7 X 16.1 X 22.8 centimetres (length X width X depth) which means this is less of a looming monstrosity and more of a  welcome inclusion to your workspace. We’ve come a long way from towers of drives to this compact design which will fit in with modern device sensibilities, and that isn’t a mistake…

Industrial design by Neil Poulton

The small, all-aluminum grey industrial look of the 6big comes from designer Neil Poulton who marries form with function in all his work.

It’s his name you will find on the back of the 6big and its his work that has created the distinct look here. It’s been a while since we’ve seen a device that has zero fat. It’s a good thing we’re writing words and not designing hardware as there’s no way we could have made something that looks as good as the 6big while also packing all the required functionality into the previously mentioned tiny frame.

Safety nets

We already know that Seagate’s great IronWolf Pro drives are inside of the 6big, but what does that mean for the safety of your data and what else is on offer?

These drives are rated for 300 TB/year workloads so they’re rated for heavy editing loads all year round. With everyone working from home nowadays the old nine to five seems to be dead, so it’s good to know that the IronWolf Pros will keep going even if you’re using them from the time you wake up to the time you go to bed.

Finally, and maybe most importantly, is the 5-year Rescue Data Recovery Services. Not only are you getting one free data recovery attempt at no additional cost to you, but there’s a historic 90 percent success rate from customers in the past.
