Huawei Pay finally launching in SA this week

It has taken a few years, but Huawei Pay is now ready to launch in South Africa, officially becoming available to use in the country come 3rd December this week.

The availability of the payment platform became a bit of a running joke at local Huawei media briefings, with it routinely being teased as being in the offing, but now thanks to a partnership with Zapper, it will be ready to use on Huawei smartphones.

This launch also comes a couple of months later than when Huawei Mobile South Africa confirmed to Hypertext that it would be arriving in Q3 of this year.

Either way it is welcome.

According to Huawei, this new digital wallet can be used at most checkouts, either in-person or online, with every transaction authenticated by your passcode or fingerprint to facilitate fraud protection.

In addition, Huawei Pay doesn’t use your bank card number to handle transactions, the company confirms, nor does it store those details on your device or on Huawei Pay servers, and is not shared with merchants.

“We are proud to launch Huawei Pay in South Africa in partnership with Zapper. With Huawei Pay, you add your bank cards to the app and then pay in stores simply by scanning the Zapper QR Payment Code on the bill when you check out. All local debit and credit cards from all local banks are supported,” noted Likun Zhao, VP at Huawei Consumer Business Group for SA, regarding the announcement.

“We are in the business of facilitating transactions and by putting the Zapper solution in the hands of millions of South African consumers, many more merchants can now also confidently offer cashless transactions. It is clear this partnership is a win for the local mobile payments market and we look forward to continued innovation together,” added Brett White, CEO of Zapper of the partnership.

You can download the Huawei Pay solution via the Huawei Wallet on its AppGallery come 3rd December.
