Like many other carmakers, Volkswagen has been pushing forward with its electric vehicle plans. This year that has included the ID.3 (pictured above) but, looking to the future, VW is reportedly looking at developing a more affordable EV.
Such a move makes sense, especially as price remains one of the main barriers to entry when it comes to electric vehicles, with the other of course being a suitable charging station infrastructure.
As for the reported, Reuters says that car in question is codenamed the “Small BEV” (Battery Electric Vehicle) by VW, and the company wants it to do for electric cars what the Beetle did for normal cars before it.
To that end, it is believed that the Small BEV will also be far more “affordable” than many of the German EVs currently on the market, with prices being bandied about in the $24 000 to $30 000 range.
Working off of the lower end of the spectrum, that would make it as expensive as a current Comfortline Polo (~R322 400). The comparisons to the Polo are for good reason too, as it is said that the Small BEV will be similarly sized to one of VW’s best selling models to date.
As for when the Small BEV will be ready to unveil to the world, as well as hit the road, remains to be seen, but VW has been confident with regard to its electric vehicle plans, hoping to have as many as 300 different models available by 2030.
It also plans to build 1.5 million EVs by 2025, so hopefully the Polo-sized BEV is heading to the production line soon.
