Apple will kick off its ARM generation with three MacBooks according to a report

Earlier this week Apple teased that it would be hosting an event next week with nothing more than the event’s name – “One More Thing” – to go on.

However, the prevailing rumour at the moment is that Apple will be debut its first ARM-based computer since announcing it would no longer rely on Intel for silicon.

Adding fuel to those rumours is a report from Bloomberg which reveals that Apple’s suppliers are ramping up production of three notebooks.

These notebooks are a 13 and 16inch MacBook Pro and a 13inch MacBook Air.

According to the publication, Foxconn will be assembling both the 13inch MacBook Pro and the MacBook Air while Quanta Computer is building the larger MacBook Pro.

While the silicon is being changed, Bloomberg appears to think this will be the only change to the notebooks.

As for performance it looks like Apple will be basing its processors for the notebooks on the A14 chip which powers iPhones and the new iPad Air.

This once again raises the issue of performance, especially as regards a machine with a “Pro” suffix. While developers have been working on compatibility for ARM processors for a while now, whether these processors will have the raw power professionals need on a day to day basis will be key to the success of this move.

With that having been said, Apple isn’t worth $2 trillion by accident. While we don’t know what sort of performance we’ll see next week, we’re very curious about what Apple has in store.
