COVID-19 in South Africa: 26th November

The past 24 hours has seen a significant rise in the number of new cases for COVID-19 in South Africa. This as 3 250 new cases have been recorded, pushing the country’s total to date to 775 502.

This latest report also sees the highest number of new daily infections this week. As such, it does little to quell concerns of a rise in infections for the country, and growing rumours that another hard lockdown may come into effect during the festive season.

Added to this, is the fact that active cases and recovery data has been shared in this report.

As Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize explains, this is because of the data that Gauteng has shared, which needs to reconciled following a request from the National Department of Health (NDoH).

“We have brought this to the attention of the province and they have indicated that they are in the process of harmonising the data,” said Mkhize yesterday.

“For this reason, we will not be reporting the recoveries and active cases in the province for today while we await the urgent conclusion of these processes,” he added.

While that data is missing, the NDoH unfortunately reported that 118 new fatalities have been recorded over the past 24 hours, with the total now sitting at 21 201.

Of the new 118, the NDoH says 51 are from the Eastern Cape, the Free State accounts for 24, Gauteng has seven, KwaZulu-Natal has two, Limpopo features four and the Western Cape has 30.

The full breakdown of COVID-19 in South Africa, sans updated recoveries and active cases, is as follows:
