DStv launches Explora Ultra featuring 4K and Netflix support for R2499

DStv has today released the latest version of its decoders in the Explora Ultra with the headlining features here being support for 4K resolution, Dolby Atmos audio and Netflix.

Wifi here is built in and the devices are made locally. The A9 Remote Control has apparently been redesigned to make “searching for content even easier”.

The Explora Ultra was revealed back in August of this year together with the Streama Set-top box from Skyworth.

Back then pricing for the Explora Ultra was a mystery but we now know that the device costs R2 499 once off excluding installation, and R3 699 with installation.

“As part of the partnership, the Netflix app will be integrated into the new Explora Ultra to allow DStv customers the option to sign up or sign into their Netflix account to enjoy the Netflix experience. The partnership also grants DStv customers with an Explora Ultra the possibility of adding their Netflix subscription to their monthly DStv bill,” reads a press release sent to us.

Aside from Netflix DStv also boasts of its 140 channels available through its service. Access to channels, of course, depends on your chosen package. At the time of writing the broad selection DStv Premium is R749 per month, but cheaper options such as DStv Compact (R359 per month) are also available.

For access to the lauded Netflix pricing right now is between R99 and R169 in South Africa depending on your subscription type. For those who don’t like Netflix, or DStv’s own Showmax streaming service, there is promise of more third party offerings in the future.

To see more of this decoder’s offerings you can head to its dedicated page on the DStv site.

The timing of the Explora Ultra launch seems rather odd. Just this week the new Xbox Series X|S were released in South Africa, and next week the PlayStation 5 will arrive on our shores. Aside from technical overlap between these consoles and the decoder – all the new consoles support 4K and Netflix too – all but the most wealthy consumers won’t be able to pick multiple devices up in the same month.
