The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) will today close applications for prospective students to receive funding for education in 2021.

NSFAS opened the application cycle on 3rd August 2020. By 31st August more than 160 536 applications had come in, and on 5th November this amount had reached 493 904.

We’ve not received an update on application numbers since 5th November, but we have to imagine that the half million mark has since been passed as we reach the final day of open applications.

While today is the deadline, very late students still have until midnight local time to apply.

If you’re one of those students, parents or educators who would like to apply last minute all the details to do so are available on the official NSFAS website. While online is the preferred way to do things applications can also be had in person at National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) centres across the country.

As always certain supporting documents are required and a video tutorial of the process can be found here.

Regardless of how you apply just take note that you may experience some problems. When NSFAS announced that there was one day left to apply many took to Twitter to discuss problems they’ve had. Looking through these replies many have to do with server issues, so hopefully this has since been fixed.

While NSFAS is open to many it’s usually associated with Matric students. 2020’s Matrics have had a rough go of things with the pandemic irreparably damaging the school year and other problems such as leaked papers and the Department of Basic Education threatening rewrites.

Despite this the Matric exams continue today with Life Sciences Paper 2 and Religion Studies Paper 2. These exams will conclude on 15th December, with results scheduled to be released on 22nd January.
