PlayStation confirms launch day PS5 sales will be online-only

If you have been following the news surrounding next-gen consoles this year, you’ll no doubt be trawling through the new Xbox Series X|S reviews that have been published worldwide this afternoon. For those of the PlayStation persuasion, there’s an important update regarding the PS5.

To that end, the Sid Shuman, senior director for SIE Content Communications, posted a blog about the launch day of the PS5 and physical retail sales.

Namely that they will not be happening on launch day as a result of the threat that COVID-19 poses in terms of increased infections.

“Hi all – the launch of the PlayStation 5 console on November 12 (or November 19, depending on your region) is almost upon us! In the interest of keeping our gamers, retailers, and staff safe amidst COVID-19, today we are confirming that all day-of launch sales will be conducted through the online stores of our retail partners,” writes Shuman.

“No units will be available in-store for purchase on launch day (November 12 or November 19, depending on your region) – please don’t plan on camping out or lining up at your local retailer on launch day in hopes of finding a PS5 console for purchase. Be safe, stay home, and place your order online,” he adds.

For South Africans, we fall under the 19th November date advised.

He also urged that if you are planning a physical pick up of your pre-ordered console, that you should check with the retailer in question to confirm the necessary procedure.

“Gamers who have pre-ordered for pick-up at their local retailer should still be able to do so at their designated appointment time, under the retailer’s safety protocols. Please confirm the details with your local retailer,” he concluded.

While the news comes a little last minute, with a just over two weeks until the PS5 will be delivered or picked up locally.

Given that stocks are limited at most outlets, however, as with most things in 2020, it may be better to hold off until next year.
