PS5 FAQ confirms supported resolutions for the console

As we edge closer to the local launch of the PlayStation 5, Sony has released a rather comprehensive FAQ for the PS5, answering some of our lingering questions regarding the next-gen console.

Perhaps one of the most important aspects spoken about, looking at the replies in the comments section of the PlayStation blog post, is the supported resolutions on the PS5.

To that end the FAQ says that, “Supported resolutions are 720p, 1080i, 1080p, and 2160p. PS5 can output resolutions up to 2160p (4K UHD) when connected to a 4K display,” it explained when it comes to whether a 4K TV is a must for using the console.

As you can see above, there is a crucial resolution missing – 1440p. This is particularly important for those players who aim to use their PS5 in tandem with a monitor instead of a TV, with 1440p the agreed upon quality that most players will likely be enjoying next-gen consoles on.

It also looks like no support for 1440p is being planned at this time.

The lack of support for the resolution probably won’t impact pre-orders, but down the line, it may influence decisions from potential players.

Sticking with the supported resolutions, the FAQ also noted that the PS5 will support 8K out of the box. A future update will also bring this functionality to life, once the compatible content is available of course.

“PS5 is compatible with 8K displays at launch, and after a future system software update will be able to output resolutions up to 8K when content is available, with supported software,” the blog says.
