Snapchat now has a TikTok clone called Spotlight

Despite its Trump-shaped issues, TikTok has remained the social media darling for many. So much so that Instagram has its own clone of the short video format platform called Reels that it recently rolled out, and now Snapchat is getting into the game with Spotlight.

In order to drum up interest in Spotlight, Snapchat is also offering creators the chance to win money for the best snaps created each day.

“Submit your best video Snaps to Spotlight for the opportunity to earn a share of more than $1 million that we’re distributing to creators every day!,” says the company’s announcement.

In order to share your snaps for consideration, there are some content guidelines that must be adhered to, as well as creators needing to be 16 years and older.

Another interesting element is that content on Spotlight will be moderated, along with having public comments disabled.

“We designed Spotlight to entertain our community while living up to Snapchat values, with our community’s well being as a top priority. Spotlight content is moderated and doesn’t allow for public comments,” says Snapchat.

Whether this results in a “friendlier” online community using Spotlight remains to be seen, but it’s clear that Snapchat does not want to get embroiled with several of the issues that have plagued TikTok in the past.

For now the new platform will not be available everywhere that Snapchat is, with only US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, and France having access for now.

That said, more countries are expected to be added in the coming weeks and months.
