Two new starfighters are coming to Star Wars: Squadrons

Those who are still playing Star Wars: Squadrons should rejoice as two new starfighters have been announced for the upcoming Update 4.0 in December.

The two ships are fan favourites: the B-Wing for the New Republic (rebel scum) and the TIE Defender on the side of the Empire.

At launch Squadrons had eight starfighters – one for each faction across four classes of ship: Fighter, Interceptor, Bomber and Support. The B-Wing will be a Bomber class ship, and the TIE Defender a Fighter.

For those who haven’t played the game a Fighter is a general all-purpose ship that can do a bit of everything. A Bomber, as you may have guessed, focuses on big damage to stationary targets with all manner of explosives.

This will mean a bit of unbalance in the force game as these two categories will have more choices compared to Interceptor and Support. Developer Motive Studios has addressed this and how it will affect the balance of the game:

“These two starfighters are as powerful as they are iconic, though understandably balanced out for the purposes of the game… each [ship will be able] to use the components relevant to their faction and class, but they’ll also come with their own unique aspects in line with what you’d expect from them, such as the B-wing with its gyro-cockpit and swiveling wings and the TIE defender with its shields,” the developer writes.

“These functions and a couple unique components will help them differentiate themselves from the other starfighters in their classes and factions, but we’ve also made sure they aren’t outright better by default. There’s still going to be good reasons to pick a Y-wing over a B-wing or a TIE fighter over a TIE defender and vice versa. It’ll depend on your playstyle and what the situation calls for,” they add.

Aside from the renders of the B-Wing and TIE Defender in the header image above, we also know that a cosmetic variant for the former will be available. This variant will make the ship look like the one from Star Wars: Return of the Jedi (Episode VI).

Update 4.0 will be out next month, but on 25th November Update 3.0 will come to the game adding a new map (Fostar Haven) as well as four new components. More details for Update 3.0 can be found here.

We’re happy to see updates coming to Squadrons at all after Motive Studios had no plans for DLC initially. Just last month we also got a supply drop of cosmetic items from The Mandalorian, so there’s been quite a lot of new stuff since the game launched.

Star Wars: Squadrons is available right now on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. You can read our review of the game at launch here.
