Uber Pass launched in SA as R99 per month subscription plan

In 2020 South Africans have seen the value that digital services hold as the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown resulted in a need to find contactless solutions. Aware of this, Uber looked at innovative ways to make its Rides and Eats platforms more appealing.

With this way of life set to continue for the foreseeable future, now Uber Pass is being launched in South Africa.

Uber Pass is a new monthly subscription plan that bundles together Rides and Eats into one convenient solution, according to Uber.

“For anyone relying on Uber to move around their city or have local favourites delivered to their door, Uber Pass is live nationwide for customers in cities like Port Elizabeth, Johannesburg, Cape Town, East London and Durban. This monthly plan unlocks savings on Uber rides, Eats delivery, and grocery order through an all-in-one bundle of benefits,” explains a press release about the solution sent to Hypertext.

It also notes that South Africa is the first country to receive Uber Pass in the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region.

Pricing for the solution starts at R99 per month, with Uber highlighting the following as included:

  • “10% off 45 UberX, XL, Connect, and Go rides to a maximum of 45 total rides per month
  • 15% off Uber Black and Van to a maximum of 45 total rides per month
  • Free delivery and 5% off total basket on Eats orders (incl. groceries) over R80 or above  up to a maximum of 30 deliveries per month, where available.”

For those who make frequent use of the ridesharing and food delivery services of Uber, this latest offering could prove worthwhile.

“Wherever you need to go – and for all the meals in between – we’re committed to helping you save time, stay within budget, and unlock more flexibility on our platform,” notes Frans Hiemstra, GM for Uber Sub Saharan Africa.

Along with Uber Pass, the company also pointed to some of its other recent announcements, such as a newly designed interface for Eats on the mobile app. There is also a group ordering feature that is expected to launch later in the year.

“We’re always looking at ways we can improve the lives of South Africans by offering solutions that work for their everyday needs. Uber is about developing technology to be more and do more, bringing the convenience, affordability and reliability synonymous with the app to as many people as possible,” concludes Hiemstra.
