At $20 on pre-order, we wish the Wyze Watch shipped to SA

Ever heard of the Wyze Watch before today? Neither did we, but this new wearable from the same company that specialises in budget-friendly smart home cameras, piqued our interest because of its pre-order price – $20.

That’s right $20 (~R308), which immediately had us thinking why other smartwatch makers are charging so much for their offerings?

Before you go throwing your current smartwatch away, let’s run through what the Wyze Watch is sporting. Available in either a 44mm (1.4″) or 47mm (1.75″) frame, this offering looks a lot like the Apple Watch Series 5 or Huawei Watch Fit.

It also features an aluminium body and weighs 46.6g, along with a 300mAh battery on the 47mm model that Wyze claims can go for up to nine days. That would eclipse many of the offerings on the market today, with the notable exception of the Huawei Watch GT series.

Other features and sensors include an IP68-rated waterproof design that’s good for use up to two metres deep, along with the ability to track activity and sleep by pairing with either the Google Fit or Apple Health mobile apps via Bluetooth 5.0.

Oh, there’s also a heart rate and blood oxygen sensor thrown in for good measure.

Added to this is compatibility with popular apps like Gmail, Instagram, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp and Twitter, although it should be noted that the applications do not run natively on the Wyze Watch, and work off of your smartphone, with notifications appearing on your wrist.

It’s certainly not as feature or specification rich as some of the other far more expensive smartwatch options out there, but for a device that takes care of the basics, the fact that it only costs $20, is quite the feat.

Sadly, the Wyze Watch does not ship outside of the United States, but savvy consumers out there can always find a way around that.

The Wyze Watch pre-orders will begin shipping come February 2021 in the United States, so it will be interesting to see what early reviews for this device are like, and whether the performance is as low as its price.
