Cyberpunk 2077’s seizure problem is being looked into by the devs

Cyberpunk 2077 is just a day away from a public release but it has been discovered to have potentially very harmful strobing light effects which can set off epileptic / seizure episodes. After this was revealed there hasn’t been much of an update until now.

On 7th December Game Informer published a piece called “Cyberpunk 2077 Epileptic PSA” in which writer Liana Ruppert – who suffers from seizures herself – pointed out potential problems those susceptible to such things.

Ruppert highlighted two parts of the game in particular for the story: screen effects meant to simulate electronic glitching, and light strobing which plays during the Braindancing mechanic. The later is especially egregious, recording to Ruppert, as it appears to unintentionally use a series of flashing lights similar to those used to purposefully onset seizures for medical diagnostics.

Thankfully we now have an official update about what is being done about this issue, which also links to the Game Informer story so people can read it for themselves.

No date is given for when the changes will be added to the game, or if these will be available by the time the general public has access to the game in a few hours when it unlocks for the world.

As for the aforementioned EULA (End User Licence Afreement) this is what it reads at the time of writing, in relation to seizures:

“Full text: 3.2 Seizure Warning. Cyberpunk 2077 may contain flashing lights and images, which may induce epileptic seizures. If you or anyone in your household has an epileptic condition, please consult your doctor before playing Cyberpunk 2077. If you experience dizziness, altered vision, eye or muscle twitches, loss of awareness, disorientation, any involuntary movement, or convulsions while playing, immediately discontinue use and consult your doctor.”

“Quick summary: ‘Nother warning here, an’ it’s an important one, too! If you or someone you live with suffers from an epileptic condition, talk to your doctor before jackin’ into Cyberpunk 2077.”
