This week many South Africans will be looking to call an end to work this year, as things usually prepare to wind down, but in a pandemic year, the threat of a second wave of infections for COVID-19 in South Africa looms large.
This as the number of new daily infections continues to remain high, with 7 999 new cases reported over the past 24 hours, according to the latest statistics from the National Department of Health (NDoH).
As a result, the total number of infections for the country to date now sits at 860 964, with 761 011 recoveries also being reported. This translates to a recovery rate of 88 percent, which sees the figure drop from its 92 percent mark only two weeks ago.
Along with a drop in the recovery rate, 170 new fatalities have unfortunately been recorded too. The total number of deaths related to COVID-19 in South Africa now sits at 23 276. Of the new 170, the Eastern Cape and Western Cape account for the largest numbers once again, at 94 and 54 respectively.
