Hardware details, game performance slowly revealed for GPD Win 3

Since last month Chinese company GPD has been gradually releasing details about its Win 3, an upcoming device that packs a Windows gaming experience into a handheld with a form factor inspired by the Sony Vaio UX.

We already know that it’s about the same size of the Nintendo Switch Lite (albeit thicker) but over the last few days GPD has given a proper detailed look at the outer hardware and some better idea of the machine’s performance.

While everything here may seem normal on the surface – well relatively normal for such a unique device – there is some unique features like Thunderbolt 4 on the bottom for charging / interfacing with a dock, but a regular USB A port on the top for general peripherals.

GPD makes a big deal over the fingerprint scanner in a separate tweet with sound justification: as the keyboard is hidden under the screen requiring it to be pushed up for access, it would be a pain to re-enter a password to log in. The fingerprint scanner skirts around this issue by allowing users to log in with biometrics instead.

Also of interest to us is that the air intake is on the back while the hot air outlet is on the top, with the latter also mimicking Nintendo Switch consoles. This should mean that there’s less hot air around your fingers around the back when in use, with the downside being that the air will heat up the screen when it’s pushed up.

As heavy use in gaming will usually be done with the screen down this shouldn’t be a problem, but it’s worth mentioning.

In terms of actually playing games that the next bit of information GPD has shared, showing off performance in eight popular games.

Unfortunately the announcement is in Chinese, but it’s easy to work out what it’s conveying.

The GPD Win 3 will come with two options for CPUS with both being from Intel: the i7-1165G7 and the i5-1135G7. Both will be paired with 16GB of RAM and a 500GB NVMe SSD.

When looking at these numbers it’s important to remember that they are average FPS results and they’re from the manufacturer. Also worth note here is the screen of the Win 3, which is 5.5 inches and only 720p. No details have been provided about the games’ settings or resolution, so take it all with a grain of salt.
