We have a release date for the new Mortal Kombat movie, but sadly no trailer

Earlier this month, Warner Bros. confirmed plans for its upcoming blockbuster and big budget films, with 17 films set to be simultaneously released in theatres and HBO Max (US only) over the next 13 months. While Wonder Woman 1984 and Dune will likely get much of the attention, another project has piqued our interest – Mortal Kombat.

That’s right, the so bad it’s good 90s films based on the wildly popular and violent gaming franchise is getting a remake.

We also have a release date for Mortal Kombat, with its official Twitter account confirming that it will be released in cinemas and HBO Max come 16th April. It should be noted that the date is for the United States, and at the time of writing, HBO Max is only available to stream in the US.

Still, we have a date, and a look at the iconic Mortal Kombat logo.

Sadly though, no trailer or visual teaser is accompanying the announcement. Something involving Scorpion and Sub-Zero would not have gone amiss, for example, with the former being a favourite from the gaming franchise.

Speaking of which, we’ve become big fans of the more recent gaming titles, especially when it comes to plot, building of the lore and the solid cutscenes that intersperse gameplay. We’ve remarked on more than one occasion on how it could serve as inspiration if another live action attempt at Mortal Kombat was made.

Now it only remains to be seen if it deliver in the same way that the recent games have, along with paying homage to the 90s films before it. Perhaps we’ll have a better idea when a trailer lands?
