Over the past few weeks, we’ve seen the number of new infections for COVID-19 in South Africa steadily increase.
It consequently peaked significantly over the past 24 hours, with 10 008 new cases recorded by the National Department of Health’s (NDoH) latest report, pushing the total for the country to date to 883 687.
As such there can be no confusion that South Africa is indeed in the midst of a second wave of infections, which could prove more devastating for the country during the festive season when lockdown regulations are likely to be ignored by most.
The other key figures from the NDoH report show that over 5.96 million tests have been conducted to date, with 774 585 recoveries being recorded. The latter means the recovery rate now sits at 87.6 percent, meaning that it continues to drop as a result of the increasing number of new infections.
Unfortunately, 166 new fatalities have also been reported, with the total number of deaths related to COVID-19 being pushed to 23 827.
