Most South Africans have called an end to the work year, and while that would normally be cause for celebration, there is still the pandemic to worry about, especially as the country finds itself in the midst of a second wave of infections during the festive season.
To that end the latest report for COVID-19 in South Africa from the National Department of Health (NDoH) sees the total number of cases to date rise to 921 922. This as the past 24 hours has seen 9 445 new cases being reported, which does not bode well if SA does not want to cross the one million mark before the New Year begins.
Other key figures from the NDoH show that over 6.14 million tests have been conducted to date, with 793 914 recoveries also being reported. Naturally the significant increase in new daily infections has resulted in the recovery rate slipping to 86.11 percent.
Unfortunately, 152 new fatalities have also been recorded, pushing the total number of deaths related to COVID-19 in South Africa to 24 691. Once again, the Eastern Cape and Western Cape account for the majority of new fatalities, with 105 and 30 respectively.
