Cross-border transactions now available on MTN via MoMo International Airtime

MTN has launched a new service just in time for the festive season, designed for its customers wanting to buy airtime for those who are not in South Africa. Cross-border airtime transactions are now facilitated by the network following the launch of MoMo International Airtime.

“This applies to foreign nationals living in South Africa and South Africans with friends and family living overseas,” MTN explained in a press release sent to Hypertext.

The network adds that registered MoMo users will be able to access the new service on the MoMo app or via the MoMo USSD by dialling *151# on their smartphones.

When customers buy airtime on MoMo, there is now a third option called Global Airtime, according to the network. When you select a country where the recipient resides, it will show you all the multiple operators available in each of those countries, from there you can then select the correct network operator.

Countries where the new service is supported include Pakistan, Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Malawi, Senegal, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Burundi, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo and Ghana.

You will also be charged for the airtime in South African Rands, from your MoMo wallet, and it will reflect in the relevant local currency in that specified country, which is something to be aware of if you’re unfamiliar with how the service works.

“MTN continues to provide innovative solutions for people to stay in touch with loved ones across the globe. Connecting people has always been our primary goal, and we will work tirelessly to ensure we bring people closer through the power of technology. Within this latest development, we are proud to be able to facilitate cross-border transactions,” adds chief officer of MTN SA’s Mobile Financial Services, Felix Kamenga.

Here’s a step-by-step guide for the process of this new service:

  1. Find the service by selecting “Airtime and bundles” on the landing screen.
  2. Select the global number option.
  3. Choose a country and operator from the available options.
  4. Enter the recipient MSIDSN and select an airtime value from the available options.
  5. Confirm if you accept the quote and the funds will be deducted from your MoMo wallet.
  6. The recipient will be notified of a successful transaction by their mobile operator.
