Ark II will launch on the Xbox Series X|S as a console exclusive

Ark II – the sequel to the wildly successful Ark: Survival Evolved – was revealed a few days ago, and now Xbox has announced that it will only be available on its new consoles when it launches in 2022.

This doesn’t mean the Series X|S will be the only way to play the game, however. It will still launch on PC same day as Series X|S, but there’s no word when PlayStation 5 will get access.

Billed as a strictly next generation game there’s also no mention of a potential Nintendo Switch port. The original Ark was released on Switch, but 2022 is still a long time away and we don’t know if this will still be Nintendo’s leading console in two years.

“ARK II thrusts players into a brutal new world of primitive survival against both beast and man, facing down the ever-present threats of hyper-realistic intelligent dinosaurs, aggressive alien fauna, and the exotic environments of an unearthly planet. Survivors will continue ARK’s dramatic eons-spanning story of humankind’s evolution, in this next-generation sandbox survival experience!” reads the official description of the game.

Those who have been playing Ark for years are upset at this announcement as it means they will have to wait an indefinite amount of time to play this sequel, or cave and buy new hardware. That being said both PlayStation and Nintendo are known for their exclusives, so it’s a bit weird to hear those fanbases complain about a system in gaming which has benefitted them for so long.

In the announcement of the Xbox exclusivity Tao Sila, Global Product Marketing Manager, Xbox, talks about how Microsoft’s consoles have been working with the original Ark over the years.

“The Ark franchise has a long-storied history with the Xbox community. Ark: Survival Evolved was a console launch exclusive in the Xbox Game Preview program in December 2015, gaining valuable feedback from Xbox One players along the way before launching in August 2017. When Xbox One X launched in November 2017, it was one of the first Xbox One X Enhanced titles. Then in January 2019, Xbox Game Pass members joined the Ark community then gained access to the Scorched Earth, Aberration, and Extinction DLC. Ark: Survival Evolved is also one of the first titles to be optimized for Xbox Series X|S.

As always it’s time to wait and see how things pan out. If this Xbox Series X|S exclusivity period is a month or two it won’t matter that much, but if it’s closer to the year-long deals such as those of the Epic Games Store then we can imagine the community becoming more irate.
