COVID-19 in South Africa: 7th December

Last week, the country was addressed by President Cyril Ramaphosa over the growing number of new daily infections for COVID-19 in South Africa. In particular the president voiced his concerns over hotspots appearing and the potential for a second wave to occur during the festive season.

As it turns out, those concerns are quite real, as we’ve seen multiple consecutive days where the number of new daily cases has surpassed the 4k mark. To that end the latest report from the National Department of Health (NDoH) shows that 4 116 new cases have been reported over the past 24 hours.

This has pushed the total number of cases in SA to date to 814 565, with over 5.59 million tests being conducted and 744 780 recoveries also being reported. The latter sees the recovery rate drop slightly to 91 percent, with it having remained at the 92 percent mark for a number of weeks previously.

Unfortunately 139 new fatalities have also been reported, which too has resulted in the number of deaths related to COVID-19 in South Africa rising to 22 206.

Of the new fatalities, the Eastern Cape accounts for the vast majority at 124, which is one of the reasons why the Nelson Mandela Bay region was placed under stricter regulations last week.

The full breakdown of COVID-19 in South Africa, sans updated recoveries and active cases, is as follows:
