Crossplay is coming to Destiny 2 in 2021

A flurry of updates hit the Destiny 2 community on Tuesday afternoon. While Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 owners can now enjoy features like a Field of View slider and 60fps gaming, there was more meat elsewhere.

That elsewhere was a developer update regarding rewards in Destiny 2.

We’ll get to that in moment though because what was really interesting for us was Assistant Game Director on Destiny 2, Joe Blackburn, teasing what will be coming to the game next year.

The highlight here is that Crossplay will arrive in Destiny 2 in 2021. When exactly we can expect this is an unknown but given that there is DDoS protection scheduled to arrive for consoles in Season 13 (Destiny 2 is currently in Season 12) we suspect crossplay will only arrive after that is in place.

We say this because, well, Destiny 2 on PC is a cheater’s paradise and while PC gamers may have resigned themselves to this fact, dumping a bunch of console players into the fray seems unfair and would likely be a move that pushes players away.

We also hope that Bungie allows console players to opt out of playing with those on PC. As somebody who has played Destiny 2 with both a controller and a keyboard and mouse, keyboard and mouse has an advantage.

With that having been said, the idea of a united community where you can complete a Raid with PC and console players is incredibly exciting. Perhaps The Last Word will become viable for PC players again, yeah we know that’s probably not going to happen but we can dream right?

About rewards

While Crossplay is exciting news the point of Blackburn’s update was to address a concern among Destiny 2 players as of time of writing – Destiny 2 isn’t all that rewarding right now.

That statement is loaded however because there is exciting loot in Destiny 2 right now but there isn’t much of it.

“Even as Season 12, the Deep Stone Crypt, and the full breadth of Europa weapons came online, the total count of weapons in Beyond Light is lower than we want. So, we’re making the commitment now that our future annual releases will have more weapon rewards than Beyond Light or Shadowkeep,” writes Blackburn.

“There’s no way for us to make more rewards at Destiny’s standards and still maintain the health of our current team, therefore we’re going to reinforce the Rewards Team with more talent that will allow us to deliver quality and quantity in the future. Molding someone new into a master Destiny gunsmith takes time. This isn’t going to be a change that the community will feel next week, but it does put our best foot forward as we step towards The Witch Queen and Lightfall,” the assistant game director added.

But one gripe still needs to be addressed and that is a gripe about armour.

Sunsetting armour is something the Destiny 2 community is not keen on and rightly so. Unlike weapons, armour requires a plethora of infusion materials to “Masterwork”. Masterworking is something that is encouraged as it gives a stat boost to your armour.

The problem here is that grinding to infuse armour which becomes useless in 12 months sounds like a bad investment, and it is. So much so that players such as myself simply look for replacements rather than trying something new.

As an example, I have been using a Warmind Cell build since Season of the Worthy and have no plans to change that. This is bad and something Bungie hopes to address in the future.

“We envision a better solution for how armor intersects with Infusion Caps. The personality of armor comes from mods right now, so gaining a new piece of armor often means just trying to find a piece of armor that replicates the stat allocation you already have on a piece in your vault. While we are not ready to talk concretely about armor plans right now, we do want to get more gameplay novelty on armor itself so that looting a piece of armor in a new season has the potential to change the way you play,” Blackburn explained.

This is a tad confusing as Bungie has already tried this during Year 3 of Destiny 2. During Season of the Worthy, Warmind Cell mods were introduced that could only be equipped in armour from Season of the Worthy. Bungie changed this so that the variety Warmind Cells introduced could enjoy a bit more longevity and so seasonal mod slots fizzled into nothing. These days only Raid armour contain a specialised mod slot.

We’re curious to see what solution Bungie has in store here and most importantly, how that solution is received by the community.

One final slice of good news in this update regards Weapons which you can no longer acquire. Specifically, Whisper of the Worm, Outbreak Perfected and Felwinter’s Lie will be for sale through the Monument to Lost Lights kiosk at the Tower next season (Season 13).

It’s a pity that the missions associated with those weapons won’t be available though. We really do miss the rush of finishing The Whisper with only a minute to spare.
