Cyberpunk 2077: 8 million pre-orders, $50 million in revenue on Steam

Cyberpunk 2077 has now been in the wild for more than a day and we know some interesting numbers about its success thanks to official sources.

The @CDPROJEKTRED_IR Twitter account deals with investor relations (IR) with the CD Projekt group. It’s important to remember that “CD Projekt” is a larger company that encompasses “CD Projekt Red” (the game development side) and the GOG platform, as well as a few other subsidiaries.

It’s a massive company so these kind of investor details are important to many, but for us it’s a way to look deeper into the game.

Preamble aside, Cyberpunk 2077 was pre-ordered around eight million times. No exact figure is given but that’s still a rather impressive feat.

Of that eight million the pre-orders were split between physical copies (26 percent) and digital ones (74 percent). This is likely not a surprise to many considering how popular digital has become but it’s interesting to see the actual numbers which usually aren’t shared with the public.

The pre-orders are also revealed to be divided between console (41 percent) and PC (59 percent). Unlike the physical / digital split this one is a bit more surprising. PC has been making a massive resurgence over the last few years and with the next generation of consoles recently released – but understocked – maybe we shouldn’t be that surprised.

In terms of actual money made by Cyberpunk 2077 the investor relations account has only shared performance on the Steam platform, reporting $50 million (~R751 million) in revenue. Interestingly enough the account also points out that CD Projekt collects 80 percent of the royalties on Steam. Valve usually takes 30 percent of the cut for sales on its platform but big developers and publishers – of which CD Projekt most certainly is – can usually negotiate a better rate.

As we reported yesterday the game is being enthusiastically played on Steam where it achieved more than a million concurrent players in its first 12 or so hours on the platform, an amazingly high number for a singleplayer only game.

It’s also breaking records for viewership on streaming platforms. 

While Cyberpunk 2077 may have its problems – which we will report on soon once we’ve put more hours into the game – it seems nothing could have derailed the hype train and its experiencing massive success already.
