As we cap off 2020 it’s the best time to finish up those things we’ve been putting off the entire year, one of them is moving your tunes from Google Play Music to YouTube Music.
Google killed off Play Music earlier this year and the entire site itself may be unreachable soon. Regardless your music shouldn’t be lost yet and moving it over is still easy.
- In a browser that is logged into your Play Music account, go to the URL music.youtube.com/transfer.
- Click on “start transfer”.
- You’ll get a screen that says “Transferring your library may take a few hours”. The time it takes on this step varies.
- Once the transfer is complete you can browse your music at music.youtube.com.
Strangely enough step 3, where you need to wait for things to be transferred over, seems to take a long time regardless. Our account used for this story only has a few playlists with a dozen songs each. We hope the ~30 minutes we waited are universal and not adjusted to the size of your library.
Looking around YouTube Music and the content it transferred and we have to say we’re impressed. Not so much because of what it brought over from Play Music, but instead what it brought from YouTube.
Music we’ve interacted with on YouTube now displays for easy listening. For example we’ve hit like on many videos on YouTube over the years. YouTube Music has combed through our likes and made a new playlist of videos we’ve liked that are primarily music. This ranges from from big name celebrity acts all the way down to people making solo music at home.
Stuff like this will only show up, of course, if the Google account that you transferred the music from has a history on YouTube. This is a nice set of features we didn’t realise we wanted until now.
