[UPDATE] Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold available for pre-order in SA, with delivery expected in 2021

UPDATE: LENOVO SOUTH AFRICA HAS CONFIRMED THAT THE THINKPAD X1 FOLD WILL COST R69 999 (RRP), DEPENDING ON CONFIGURATION OF THE DEVICE AND EXCHANGE RATE.

OUR PREVIOUS STORY FOLLOWS BELOW.

Earlier this year, September to be more precise, Lenovo revealed its latest additions to the ThinkPad lineup, the X1 Fold and X1 Nano. At the time, the ThinkPad X1 Fold went up for pre-order, but only in selected regions.

Now both devices have been earmarked for the Middle East, Turkey and Africa (META) region, with pre-orders on the X1 Fold available from today, which is bundled with the Bluetooth Mini Fold Keyboard and Active Pen.

That pre-order status comes with two significant caveats, however, as neither a price, nor an exact delivery date have been disclosed for the X1 Fold at the time of writing.

For now the South African pre-order simply states that the foldable notebook is arriving soon, with the added message that, “ONCE PRE ORDERED, ESTIMATED DELIVERY TIME WILL BE CONFIRMED.”

As such, it is a bit of a mystery in terms of what you’ll be paying for the device. Working purely off of the aforementioned selected region release in September, the X1 Fold was available starting at $2 499.

This translates to ~R37 391 as of today’s Rand-Dollar exchange rate, so this may be one of the most expensive pieces of hardware that Lenovo has launched in SA in quite some time.

As such it looks like the device will be made available with early adopters in mind, especially as it is the first notebook of its kind to feature such a design. As we’ve seen with foldable phones, the first iterations have needed some kinks to be ironed out, and the same will likely apply here.

Of particular interest to us is the flexible 13″ 2K OLED display touted by the X1 Fold, which in and of itself is quite the engineering feat. If, however, the display shows telltale signs of wear and tear early, it would all be for naught.

We’ve got fingers crossed that the X1 Fold will be landing on our review desk to see how Lenovo has improved the device since the prototype version we saw in Beijing last year.

Once a more definitive launch date and pricing information is available, we’ll be sure to update this story accordingly.
