Mastercard and Visa are no longer payment options for Pornhub

Following shocking allegations that Pornhub was playing host to content that involved child exploitation, abuse and rape, Mastercard and Visa have blocked their customers from making payments to Pornhub.

Late last week, New York Times journalist Nicholas Kristof published a piece detailing the many, very worrying failings of the pornographic website. These allegations prompted Visa and Mastercard to investigate the claims independently.

While those investigations were happening, Pornhub implemented several key changes to its rules and regulations but it seems this was too little, too late.

Mastercard has now blocked its users from making payments on Pornhub after it reportedly confirmed violations of standards prohibiting unlawful conduct on the website.

Visa is still investigating the matter but has also suspended customer payments to Pornhub.

“We are instructing the financial institutions who serve [Pornhub owner] MindGeek to suspend processing of payments through the Visa network,” the firm told the New York Times.

Pornhub meanwhile said the news was “disappointing”.

“The disappointing news today comes just two days after Pornhub instituted the most far-reaching changes to safety in any user-generated platform’s history onto already existing safeguards,” the firm said in a blog post.

Below that blog post there is an interesting conversation between users who also happen to be verified models in Pornhub’s Model Program.

That conversation regards how users will be able to pay models for content now that Visa and Mastercard have cut ties with the site.

In 2019, Paypal decided to cut ties with Pornhub. Now that Mastercard and Visa have also said they won’t support payments to the website, that leaves very little payment options for users. We are aware that Pornhub accepts cryptocurrency as payment but with the site drawing 115 million visits per day in 2019, we don’t expect many of those users to be ready to dive into the world of cryptocurrency.

With Pornhub now unable to draw in subscriptions from users who more than likely make use of Visa or Mastercard, we have to wonder what the future holds for the website.

As for models on Pornhub, perhaps now is the time to consider joining a site or using a platform that lets you engage directly with your fans.
